As its main source of curriculum, Montgomery County Head Start subscribes to the Creative Curriculum, which is rooted in the theory and practices of Erikson & Piaget on child development. We also use a composite of philosophy, objectives and activities derived from the Kindergarten curriculums from the different school districts in our county. They closely correspond to the Head Start Performance Standards. Upon visiting any classroom, one might expect to find one or more of the described activities or objectives being implemented daily.
Young children learn best through play. It encourages them to use their vivid imaginations and display their wealth of creativity throughout the day. Appropriate activities that are both teachers directed and child initiated will provide windows of opportunity to strengthen growth and development.
Classroom rules developed by the teacher and students provide parameters to insure positive self-esteem, self-expression, imaginative, self-reliance and the safety of each individual.
The education of every very young child must be considered carefully. Each one, even at three, four or five years of age, hopefully, has already received an extensive education within their home. Their environment should have allowed them to develop a sense of morality. What they have acquired from their homes, we encourage the staff to implement them into the daily day. That's why the involvement of parents is crucial to the planning and operation of our program. Within our program, M.C.H.S.'s view is that parents are the child's primary teachers.
It is critical for M.C.H.S. to teach each child to appreciate and to value his own principles of human conduct as well as those of others. Each child is unique with his/her own personality, learning style, family background, etc. M.C.H.S. responds respects and values the individual differences and cultural diversities, which reflects the learning environment.
M.C.H.S. will successfully focus on the individual development of each child's social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs through education, health, nutrition and social services.
